Hard drives do fail. I‘ve seen more Hitachi failures then any others probably because it is most popular on laptops but only few Western Digital. WD is overheating more. Overheating indicates poor design or a new product thrown to consumers for beta testing. Example – Dell XPS laptops tend to have overheating and blow video cards due to extreme compact design. Why Dell so despaired squeeze in to a thin box? Because they trying compete with slim Apple Air.
Yes. It may look fashionable. But are computers about fashion or perhaps reliability and usability? Same applied to cars. Take Ford for example – always overheating problems, well at least with Australian models.

The power of modern computers million times exceeds power of the navigational computer of Appolo 11 lunched the man to the Moon. And what they doing with that power today? They compete whose computer box is thinner, nicer looking, more classy and fashionable?!
In reality new PC are less reliable then old ones. If new laptop models released every 6 month then manufacture has no time to test it. A pc user addicted to a nice looking fashionable junk become a beta tester.

The ongoing Storm Trojan attack that began Monday has morphed again, security researchers said Thursday, changing the malicious file’s name, shifting to new malware hosting servers, and adding a rootkit to cloak the bot code from anti-virus software.
… a Trojan horse program that replaces Google text advertisements on Web pages with ads from another source, depriving Google of revenue and potentially causing problems for end users.
Google may be powerless to stop the trick since it involves the modification of an internal PC file, called the hosts file, that is used to match domain names of Web sites with IP addresses
When a person visits a Web site, the browser checks the hosts file to see if it has an IP address for a particular domain name. If the hosts file is corrupted or hijacked, the browser can be directed to fetch a different Web page than the one the user intended to…

….. Google Toolbar could allow criminals to steal data or install malicious software on a system, a security researcher warned Tuesday. …The flaw lies in the mechanism Google Toolbar … Because the toolbar does not perform adequate checks when new buttons are being installed, a hacker could make his button appear as though it was being downloaded from a legitimate site when in fact it came from somewhere else. By spoofing the origin of the toolbar button, an attacker could download malicious files or launch a phishing attack against the victim…. read on
People confuse Google tool bar with Google search.
Google toolbar isn’t needed to use Google search You may need a toolbar for optional features only. To use search just go to address www.google.com (for US). Google tool bar is a software plugin (what is plugin?) usually bundled with a free software.
….. a virus analyst at Russian computer security firm Kaspersky, has been following RBN’s activities. Since October, something strange has been happening: one by one, the websites linked to the organisation have closed down. But its modus operandi has been spotted across the Far East. RBN is not shutting down, it’s diversifying. “We suppose that the organisation has been planning this for a long time,” Kamlyuk says, “but the attention it has gained has speeded up its activity. We believe they had connections with Chinese servers; and criminals trying to hide often go to Malaysia, China, Korea or Japan.”
It is thought the organisation is using China because the country’s huge number of internet users makes the group’s activities hard to monitor. There has been talk in Russia about introducing a clampdown on internet crime, and service providers around the world have blocked many of RBN’s websites.
The race is on to spot the RBN’s new websites. Raimund Genes, the chief technology officer of Trend Micro, one of the big US-based internet security firms, says he has linked the organisation to attacks on the Turkish and Brazilian governments. “What has happened at RBN has been related to all kinds of attacks on the internet,” he says. “I believe they have been too greedy.” ….

Below is a summary of some recent developments of malicious malware. The
link to the full report will take you to further in-depth information.
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management
solutions, announces the publication of Malware Evolution: July -
September 2007. The authors of the article, Alexander Gostev and Vitaly
Kamluk, are both virus analysts at the company.
In the quarterly report the Kaspersky Lab analysts talk about the
growing trend of new threats that, for the most part, are emerging as a
concentrated flow of uniform Trojan programs and whose appearance no
longer arouse the mass public discussion that they once did. The lack of
originality and the scale of activity, according to the analysts, points
to a greater professionalism among cybercriminals - attracting the
attention of the press or law enforcement agencies is no longer their
main aim.
However, the greed of the criminals has exposed the general public to
the vagaries of malware. This was underlined by the appearance of the
latest Trojan blackmailer and with Internet resources whose sites saw
the simultaneous installation of multiple botnets. The situation
surrounding the Storm botnet also caught the attention of the public as
it exceeded 2 million infected computers, and finally there was the
appearance of Trojan spyware aimed at stealing the data of users with
Russian software for accessing the stock exchange system online.
The report describes in detail the work of a virus expert, using the
example of the latest version of Gpcode.ai, a Trojan that encrypts user
data. Those reading the report get a rare insight into the world of
Russian-speaking cybercriminals and how they interact with one another.
During the investigation into Gpcode.ai, a number of interesting factors
came to light. Firstly, it became clear that there was ‘universal’ code
that was used in a range of malicious programs with differing functions.
Secondly, the analysts identified new links between different families
of malicious code which initially appeared to have nothing in common.
Thirdly, the Russian-speaking cybercriminal community is now using a
standard package consisting of two Trojans and the botnet controlled by
them.
The Kaspersky Lab experts concluded that the demand for the creation and
distribution of Trojans was encouraging the cybercrime industry to
continue evolving.
The full report can be found at Viruslist.com:
….The raid was conducted earlier this week at the New Zealand residence of the alleged botmaster, known online as AKILL. It was part of a joint effort by New Zealand police and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation…
